Behind the Curtain

Friday, March 19, 2021

We've come a long way, baby - What's next?

Grantmaking certainly has come a long way in the past decade or two. We've matured into a sophisticated, complex, nuanced profession. We've educated ourselves on the importance of process and governance. We've come down from our ivory towers and now know about and strive for collaboration and partnerships. We can evaluate and measure our impact (well, we're getting there …) and we have improved the tech to help us along the way.

But how did we get here and what has slipped through the cracks? Join us on March 18 and 19 2021 to check your rear-view mirror to see how far we have come, and through the windscreen into the distance. (We'll provide the GPS.)

Participation will be rewarded this year, so come along ready to share your stories, wins and tragedies, connect with your peers, and engage with our speakers.

What happens on each day?

Day 1: Thursday, March 18

An immersive day with fellow grantmakers from all corners of the country and all types and sizes of organisations, providing an opportunity to connect, collaborate and discuss all areas of grantmaking. A cavalcade of fascinating, fabulous speakers will provoke, encourage and invite you to lift your gaze from the everyday and be inspired in all areas of this multifaceted profession. Plus, you can keep the conversation and good times rolling with networking drinks to close the day.

Day 2: Friday, March 19

Spend the morning among your people, focusing on what really matters to you with our two "Muster" groups - one for local government grantmakers, the other for state and federal government grantmakers. Together with your peers you'll collaborate, share war stories and celebrate successes. All speakers are specially selected to ignite the conversation. Sit back and take it all in or stand up and be heard. The choice is yours, just get yourself in the room! After lunch, quiz the SmartyGrants brains trust on the latest developments in the southern hemisphere's leading grants management system.

No 2020 conference?

We had planned to convene this annual conference on August 6 and 7 2020 but, to avoid the likely threat of the growing COVID-19 virus, have taken the difficult decision to defer the event until March 18 and 19, 2021.

We expect that Melbourne, Victoria and Australia, will follow the world and be hindered in a number of ways. While it's a disappointing development, we think that it is better to make the call now and avoid unnecessary risks, while ensuring that grantmakers can have greater certainty with their planning.

Past conference attendees have said:
